Big-a** brew day for Big-a** brew fest

Brewers from around Tampa Bay collaborate on beer for the Bad Ass Brew Fest

Recently Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) hosted a collaboration brew day in honor of the Bad A** Beerfest put on by Tampa Bay Brewing Company.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company (TBBC) teamed up with Southern, Cigar City Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Green Bench, and Big Storm to brew six recipes that will be released at the Bad A** Beerfest on June 28th. All six brews will be on tap together under one tent at the festival.

The actual brewing took place at Southern on Friday, June 6th. Craft beer fans wee invited to come hang out in the Southern biergarten and watch the brewing process. Southern was chosen as the brewday location due to the brewery’s unique small batch set-up that allows for six batches to be brewed at the same time.

The six collaborations brewed for the festival include:

TBBC and Cigar City Brewpub: Weizenbock
TBBC and Barley Mow: Big IPA
TBBC and Coppertail: Saison
TBBC and Green Bench: Belgian Dubbel
TBBC and Big Storm: Smoked Scotch Ale

For the final brew, TBBC, CCB Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Greenbench, Big Storm, and Southern all independently chose some malt and hops and threw them together for a unique and surprising amalgam brew.

Southern was involved with all of brews that day, so one keg of each of the beers brewed for the festival will also be available on tap in the Southern taproom later this month.

New Beer Release for Charity: Green Bench Creative Clay Chocolate IPA

Friday night at Green Bench will see the release of “Creative Clay Chocolate IPA”. From Khris at Green Bench:

“This was a small batch collaboration we brewed with Brandon Evans from CB/BC (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cest-Bon-Brewing-Charity/1396241730635112). All money made from this beer is going to be donated to Creative Clay across the street from the brewery. It’s an adjunct based American IPA brewed with Flaked Corn and Florida Cane Sugar and aged on Cacao Nibs.”

Sounds delicious!

ACBW14 Green Bench tap takeover at Swamphead Brewery

From the Swamphead brewery website: http://swamphead.com/events/american-craft-beer-week-thursday-may-15th-green-bench-hangout-wetlands/

Come hang out with our friends from Green Bench Brewing Co. on Thursday of American Craft Beer Week. These guys are brewing amazing beer and are true craft beer artists.

Green Bench does not typically distribute beer in Gainesville but has accepted our invite to come pour beer, check out our tasting room and meet all of you folks.

Here’s recent video of Green Bench and their brewer, Khris on craftbeer.com: http://www.craftbeer.com/videos/green-bench-brewing-co-journey-of-beer

Here’s the taplist:

  • GBIPA is 6.8% ABV, 115 IBU, Dry hopped with Chinook, Simcoe, and Columbus: This our “bench-mark” beer. A medium bodied ale with aromas of soft citrus and earthy pine combined with very subtle notes of tropical fruit. This highly hopped American style IPA leaves your pallet with a lingering dry and bitter finish.
  • Stay Dry Stout is 5.2% ABV, 20 IBU, traditional Irish Dry Stout.
  • Skyway Wheat is 4.7% ABV, 45 IBU, hoppy wheat: Considered the “flagship bridge” of Florida, the Sunshine Skyway stretches 431 feet at its peak, and is over four miles long, connecting St. Petersburg to Terra Ceia through Hillsborough County waters. The impressive structure was recognized on The Travel Channel as #3 in their “Top 10 Bridges” in the World special. Equally as beautiful to behold is our hop forward American Wheat Ale, packed with four different varieties of US grown hops for a citrusy and pine-like flavor.
  • Saison de Banc Vert is 6.5% ABV, 25 IBU, 100% Oak Fermented with a farmhouse yeast in a foeder: Saisons, or Farmhouse Ales, were originally brewed as a summer seasonal in the French-speaking region of Belgium. Dry and crisp, our “Green Bench Saison” is packed with fruity esters similar to citrus fruits and spicy, peppercorn-like phenols from our farmhouse yeast strain.
  • Whitted White IPA is 4.7% ABV, 60 IBU, 100% Oak Fermented with a farmhouse yeast in a foeder, brewed with white peppercorn and grapefruit peel: An airboat took off on the first scheduled air flight in history from the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront on January 1, 1914. Honoring St. Petersburg native Lieutenant James Albert Whitted of the US Navy’s Naval Aviators, which Albert Whitted Airport is also named after, our White IPA is sessionable and refreshing, pairing the delicate spiciness of Belgian yeast and light colored peppercorns with citrus peels and a floral hop backbone.
  • Spring Bloom IIPA is 9% ABV, 100 IBU, Dry Hopped with Citra and Sorachi Ace. It is our spring seasonal ale.

Beer, soda, water and snacks will be provided on the Bus. You will be responsible for your own tab and sobriety, so sample wisely!

Note: Cycle is a cash only tasting room & most pints are are $5, but specialty beers run more.
