Big-a** brew day for Big-a** brew fest

Brewers from around Tampa Bay collaborate on beer for the Bad Ass Brew Fest

Recently Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) hosted a collaboration brew day in honor of the Bad A** Beerfest put on by Tampa Bay Brewing Company.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company (TBBC) teamed up with Southern, Cigar City Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Green Bench, and Big Storm to brew six recipes that will be released at the Bad A** Beerfest on June 28th. All six brews will be on tap together under one tent at the festival.

The actual brewing took place at Southern on Friday, June 6th. Craft beer fans wee invited to come hang out in the Southern biergarten and watch the brewing process. Southern was chosen as the brewday location due to the brewery’s unique small batch set-up that allows for six batches to be brewed at the same time.

The six collaborations brewed for the festival include:

TBBC and Cigar City Brewpub: Weizenbock
TBBC and Barley Mow: Big IPA
TBBC and Coppertail: Saison
TBBC and Green Bench: Belgian Dubbel
TBBC and Big Storm: Smoked Scotch Ale

For the final brew, TBBC, CCB Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Greenbench, Big Storm, and Southern all independently chose some malt and hops and threw them together for a unique and surprising amalgam brew.

Southern was involved with all of brews that day, so one keg of each of the beers brewed for the festival will also be available on tap in the Southern taproom later this month.

Southern Brewing & Winemaking is hosting a Summer Art Market to feature local art, crafts, food, music, and beer.

TAMPA, FL – Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) is hosting its first Summer Art Market on Sunday, May 25, from 12-5p. The market will take place in the Southern biergarten and adjacent lot.

The market will showcase 30 local artists that will have their work available for purchase. Artwork featured at the show includes paintings, jewelry, metal sculptures, baked goods, apparel, home décor, beauty products, photography, dry gardens and more.

Local musicians Fil Pate and 10th Concession will be playing in the biergarten during the event, and local vendors will have a wide variety of food available at the market. Guests will also be able to enjoy a variety of craft beer while browsing through the market.

To us, a well made craft beer is a work of art, so it makes sense to pair that up with other art mediums,” stated Marketing Manager Cindy Lyons.

Southern is brewing a special event-themed beer that will be released at the market. The company has designed special glassware for the event as well, which will be for sale in the biergarten and will get attendees discounts on draught beers all day.

I’ve had a vision of doing an event like this since we first moved to this location,” stated Kelly Fenstermacher, owner of Southern. “I’m excited to finally see it come to fruition. I love art, and as a small business owner, it’s important to me to promote other local small businesses whenever possible.”

Summer Art Market Beer Glass
Southern is at it again. They’re brewing a new beer to be released at the Summer Art Market. The Summer Art Pale Ale, inspired by summer, features a light grain bill paired with Centennial hops, orange peel, and local Orange Blossom Honey.

The brew is intended to capture the essence of summer, while also being a sessionable pale ale that is perfect for sipping in the Southern biergarten.

“We wanted to brew something for the event that reminds beer lovers of Florida summers with every sip,” stated Marketing Manger Cindy Lyons. “The orange blossom honey pairs perfectly with the oranges for a sunny day beer that is light and refreshing.”

The brewery will also be releasing a new Hibiscus Mead for the event, made with local hibiscus and Orange Blossom Honey from a nearby apiary. The mead is gluten-free.

The beer and mead will make their debut on Sunday, May 25th at the Summer Art Market, and will be available on special for guests that purchase event glassware. The commemorative glassware will be available for $5 per glass, and will get attendees $3.50 fills all day on select beers.

Southern Brewing Releases First Pyments into Tampa Bay Area

Southern Brewing Craft Pyments

Southern Brewing & Winemaking will be releasing the area’s first locally crafted pyments this month.

What’s a pyment? A pyment is a subcategory of melomel a mead made with honey and fruit that specifically uses wine grapes for the fruit  addition. Also known as “grape mead” or “honeyed wine,” the beverage is an unexplored style for most beer and wine drinkers in the Tampa Bay area.

For the first batch of pyments, Mead Maker Brian Wing used the same grape juices that are available in the wine kits on the retail side at Southern, along with Wildflower and Orange Blossom honey from a nearby Tampa Bay apiary.

Southern will begin serving the pyments on tap at 6p on February 27th, and 32 oz growler fills will be available. Hot Box’d Steamed cheeseburgers will be onsite serving food from 510p.

All About Hops: Bay Area Barley’s Angels February 2014 Meeting

It’s that time again, so get your notebooks & pencils ready because this month we’ll be doing some learnin’ about hops. Whether you are an IPA queen or a resolved Stout lover, every beer girl should know about the flavor, aroma, and bittering properties that hops bring to beer. So come on down to our new HQ, Southern Brewing & Winemaking on February 25th from 7 – 9 and learn a thing or 2 while sampling 3 selections from Southern’s Hopburst series. And, who better to teach us than hop-blogger & fellow Angel Cindy Lyons.

Featured beers will be:

• Summit/Amarillo – This version of our Hopburst Pale Ale features Summit and Amarillo hops. The Summit hops contribute distinct earthy onion and garlic tones that combine nicely with the floral and tropical fruit characteristics of the Amarillo hops. These two hops contribute a stronger bitterness to the beer than normally found in our Hopburst series that will delight IPA lovers.
• Simcoe/Citra – The Simcoe/Citra hop combination was the first in our Hopburst series and is even better this time around! The Simcoe hops provide passion fruit, pine, earth and citrus characteristics while the Citra hops add strong citrus and tropical tones. This pale ale is an excellent, refreshing brew that you can sip on all night long.
• Palisade – Known for apricot, grass and clean floral characteristics. We don’t have much of a description for this one because this is the first time they’ve ever brewed it and it’s still in the works!

Beer appropriate snacks will be provided.

Social hour starts at 6, meeting promptly at 7.

Non-members $10
Members $5 – a member discount code will be posted on the Members Only Group Page. If you have a yearly membership & have not joined the group page PM me for it.
*Gratuity is NOT included in this price, so be sure to show some love & tip your server!*

Join us for a special release party on Saturday, January 25th!

We’re releasing our very first Brazilian Pepper Honey Mead, along with a treated version aged over peaches and raspberries.

The Brazilian Pepper Mead is a sweet & spicy (think black pepper spicy – not hot spicy) mead that seems deceptively refreshing for an 8% ABV, and it’s fruit-treated counter-part is a special treat not to be missed!

The two kegs will tap at 6p. Both kegs are one and done.

We will allow 32oz growler fills of the meads.

Panini Fiction will be parked outside the taproom from 5-10p.

Southern Brewing and Wine Expands Growler Program

Growlers from Southern Brewing and Winemaking

Growlers from Southern Brewing and Winemaking

I’ve written about Southern a few times before – no secret they’re one of my favorite places to go get stuff for my HH (homebrew habit). I seldom make time to stop in for a beer, even though I know they make great stuff. Well, that’s not a problem any longer – seems like they now offer growler fills for all their beers. That’s right, kids, even seasonals, sodas, and limited releases will be offered in growlers. Now when I’m shopping for grains and stuff I be able to fill up a growler for my brew-day consumption. Good times.

For more information about what’s on tap, you’ll have to call the taproom on 813-237-7800; or better yet – just stop by.
